My First Month at The Augusta Chronicle

Here's a collection of work from my first month as the new staff photographer for the Augusta Chronicle. I was very fortunate to have heard about this position and I am grateful for the opportunity. December has been one of the longest and quickest months of my life and I still can't tell if I feel settled in our not. I suppose it will just take time (and having a bed at some point).

In my first month I have covered two funerals, a memorial, a hospital visit and many feature events. Here's a sample. Feedback with critiques and comments are welcomed.

This is a funeral I covered on Tuesday of Master Public Safety Officer Scott Richardson, 33, who died Wednesday, December 21, 2011 from wounds he received when shot during a traffic stop Tuesday evening in the City of Aiken, S.C.That's Richardson's 5-year-old son, Zander, saluting his casket in the second photo.

Weekend in Detroit

I've spent a couple of brief weekends in Detroit this summer. The first place I went was to the Heidelburg Project, an "open-air art environment in the heart of an urban community on Detroit’s East Side."

It was awesome.

Double Shooting in Flint

Before I even started at the Flint Journal in January I had heard all about how the city was plagued with crime. When I began to work here I heard stories about the previous year's homicides and how when the temperature starts to rise so does the violence.
"Just wait, as soon as it get warms out the scanner will be going crazy."
It finally got into the mid fifties today. Today, in a 15-hour time span four people were shot, one was stabbed, and two of the shooting victims died.
At this time last year Flint's homicide count was at five. Today it reached 18. I guess our crime reporters were right.
I hope this summer is not as bad as everyone dreads it will be, and I hope Flint doesn't reach a new record high like they did in 2010.

Windows

House Fire. I was only able to get a couple of frames before a cop tried to put me in the back of the cop car. No one was hurt in the fire.

Genesee County Intermediate Schools Spelling Bee. This poor kid misspelled "sultan" in the first round.

I took a weekend off for a much needed trip home to Kentucky. I took the back roads to get to Bowling Green from Louisville and I really regret not stopping to take pictures of the beautiful purple fields and budding trees. Everything is still cold, dead, and gray in Michigan. However it was amazing to see my friends back home. =) I got waffles!!

PORTRAITS:

Richard Weicorek, 94, of Burton, Mich., is one of the remaining survivors of the 1936-37 United Auto Workers (UAW) 44-day strike. He talked to me about everything (except the strike). He told me about the correct way to rob a bank, white slave trafficking on Cattle Ranches in Montana, how betting pit bulls is lucrative and ridiculous, and cowboys in Georgia. He was awesome.

Maureen Kildee and Stephen James first married before they were 21, annulling the marriage after nine months. Now, thirty years later, they have fallen in love again and were remarried on August 14, 2010. "When you fall in love it's for a lifetime," James said. "It's the attraction. We still had that, but then we fell in love with the two people we have become. The people we are now."

Candlelight Vigil

A candlelight vigil was held Thursday evening for the loss of Sean Stennett, 25, of Saginaw who was shot early Thursday morning, becoming the fourth homicide victim of 2010. Friends, family, and supporters walked more than a half mile from the Red Eye Cafe in Old Saginaw to the site where the shooting took place.

Cassandra Stephens, 18, and Zach Bellwood, 21, both of Saginaw, stand at the site where their friend Sean Stennett, 25, was shot early Thursday morning. Bellwood organized the candlelight vigil. "I wanted to honor my friend," Bellwood said.

Soldier's Return

I shot the return and funeral of Army Spc. Deangelo B.Snow, 22, of Buena Vista, Mich., who died in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan after insurgents attacked his vehicle with a rocket-propelled grenade on September 17, 2010. This was the first time I have ever shot a funeral.

Labor Day Weekend (3 weeks late)

For Labor Day weekend the paper ran a story about how Michigan has required schools to start after the three-day weekend so that it would not interrupt the last tourist weekend of summer. I went to Jellystone Camp Grounds in Frankenmuth and found this amazing family that have been coming to this campsite for over five years for Labor Day. I was only going to stay for 30 minutes, but ended up staying over four hours with them. I loved how well everyone got along with each other. You could tell they really enjoyed each others company, and I'm thankful they let me be a part of it for a short time.

This is Morris James Young Jr. He won the Piazza Award for best boxer in Saginaw County for 2010. When I went to go photograph this young man I could not believe how lucky I was. The light was amazing and he never posed for me. Everything you see is him acting completely natural. While shooting this I had an entire household of people watching me from the door on the right. Kids, friends, and family. It made me uncomfortable at first, but no one said a word to me and they let me work. Young's trainer happened to be there and they practiced for awhile since Young had a boxing match the following evening which he did not attend due to illness (according to his coach).

Anyway... I would like to narrow this edit down. Any help would be appreciated.

I drove all the way to Caro to shoot a baseball game that wasn't happening...Caro is an hour away. However, I was so fortunate to find this feature on highway to the game. They let me shoot, but I think I really wierded them out.

This was a very boring assignment, but here's some info on the Ash Borer that is infecting Bay City:

"Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, is an exotic beetle that was discovered in southeastern Michigan near Detroit in the summer of 2002. The adult beetles nibble on ash foliage but cause little damage. The larvae (the immature stage) feed on the inner bark of ash trees, disrupting the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients." -http://www.emeraldashborer.info/

Anyway, its a very big problem here, and these men are from Bay Landscaping inspecting trees and giving demonstrations on how to treat infected trees.

KCQ Country Music Festival on Ojibway Island, Saginaw, Mi.
Teenagers run a chunk of ice over each other, to keep themselves cool during the day-long concert. An estimated 85,000 people showed up to the annual event.
Let me tell you how strange it is to walk up to a person dressed country and instead of the typical southern drawl, out comes a Michigan whine. Its so strange.

Old Town Lawn Chair Film Festival.
Every Sunday during the summer the public is invited to bring lawn chairs to a parking lot in Old Town Saginaw where they project movies on the side of an old building. This past Sunday was the first night of the season, with "Whip It" being the premiere movie.
This little girl, Lydia, came with her father to watch the movie. As you can tell she's awesome.

George Zaharopoulos, Kosta Povich, Jonathan Bernhart, and Patrick Dietzel, prepare their traditional Cretan costumes, known as a Vraka, for the upcoming Saint Demetrios Perea dance performance.

I was taking a portrait of two men who witnessed an air show crash 65 years ago in the very field they stood beside. While the reporter was talking with them I took a couple "artsy" shots.

The Kentucky HS Rodeo invited the Indiana and Tennessee HS Rodeo kids for competition this weekend on Halloween at the Western Kentucky University Ag Expo Center, in Bowling Green, Ky. I got there with a half an hour of sunlight and time left to shoot before the kids had to get ready for their events. This is what I got.
(I know the above photo isn't sharp. It was meant to be a quick shot to help me with captions, but I really liked it once I dropped my images).

This woman was so nice. She didn't even know my name and immediately offered me home cooked chili and a drink. Her name is Jeanne Strange.

Bowling Green had its annual ice storm last night. It was so very pretty this morning.

Western decided to hold classes despite all of the ice and unfortunately a student was injured after a tree limb broke and struck her as she was walking through campus. She was conscious when paramedics arrived on the scene. I heard that she was going to be alright but I haven't received any more information since she was taken to the hospital this morning. I hope she is all right.
This was my first spot news event.
UPDATE: The girl is just fine.

My neighbor from Russia grows white bell peppers in her backyard and gave my roommate a couple one afternoon. Some of the peppers are a creamy white, others look more like a yellow pepper, but they're very good, much more mild than a green pepper. Anyway, they were in good light so I took their portrait.
